NORTH Wales Assembly Member, Mark Isherwood, was on hand to congratulate pupils from Ysgol Dinas Bran, Llangollen, on their achievements in an international environment competition when they were presented with their certificates at the Royal Welsh Show this week.

Young Reporters for the Environment is an international programme, promoted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which operates in 27 countries throughout the world and is managed in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy and funded by Countryside Council for Wales. The programme provides secondary school pupils with a vision of the professional world of journalism and may inspire them to pursue this as a career. Pupils investigate local environmental problems and issues and report on them with a positive approach, whilst investigating solutions through written, photographic or video submissions.

This year’s Welsh winner was Ysgol Dinas Bran pupil Will Anderson.

Fellow Ysgol Dinas Bran pupils Mae Morgan, Leah Jones, Carys Stallard, Liz Hughes and Daisy Morgan were runners up – and also won second prize in the international contest in the 11–14 age category, beating competition from entrants worldwide.

Will’s photojournalism entry  ‘A Boggy Future?’ depicted the natural habitat of Lake Vyrnwy near Snowdonia and some of the potential threats from climate change that could affect the area.

Mae, Leah, Carys, Liz and Daisy meanwhile impressed the international judges with their engaging documentary, ‘Coast’, a report about the issue of cycling on Llandudno Promenade.

Morgan Parry, Chair of Countryside Council for Wales, presented the pupils with their certificates at the show.

Mr Isherwood said: “As Shadow Minister for North Wales I was extremely proud to be present to see these talented young people receive their well deserved certificates at the Royal Welsh Show. To have one winner from Denbighshire is an achievement in itself, but to have gained a first prize in Wales and a 2nd prize internationally is phenomenal and just proves how talented our young people in North Wales are. I congratulate them all.”
