EDUCATION MINISTER URGED TO RESPOND TO INCREASE IN WELSH CLASS SIZES ?

 

North Wales Assembly Member Mark Isherwood has called on the Welsh Government Education Minister to respond to school census statistics showing an almost year on year increase in the percentage of infant and junior pupils in classes over 30 since 2004.

 

?Speaking in the Chamber he said:

 

"A decade ago, the Welsh Government was telling us that falling pupil numbers would mean smaller class sizes and improved pupil-teacher ratios. That then morphed into ‘surplus places’ and the drive for ‘bigger is better’, at whatever cost to community schools. How do you therefore respond to the National Union of Teachers’ statement …..that the number of classes with 30 or more students had increased again? It said that, since 2004, there had been an almost year-on-year increase in the percentage of infant and junior pupils in classes over 30."
